The events

This summer, Helia Native Nursery invites you to our new home at Sky Meadow Farm to explore nature through: visual art; mind and body connection and wellness; conservation; and knowledge of the wild world. 

The Nursery will be open from 9:00am- 3:30pm for plant sales on our Open Farm Days (when we hold workshops, events and Fridays). Come mingle and learn with fellow native plant enthusiasts. 

Events are open to the public. Registration via email is recommended.

Please email or call with any questions. We are on the border of Alford and West Stockbridge, and our farm road is marked with a sign and next to 124 East Rd. mailbox.

CREATING DESIGNS // PERENNIAL PLANTERS

Learn how to design beautiful and low-maintenance perennial planters for that sunny spot at your home or on your terrace. Learn how pot size, shape, and placement can create a welcoming and enjoyable display for both you and pollinators.

A LOG’S LIFE // READING + ACTIVITY FOR CHILDREN

Hannah Goodnow will read of A Log’s Life by Wendy Pfeffer, followed by the dissection and investigation of a log to see what can be discovered. What does it look like inside? What does it feel like? Does it smell funny? How did this log fall down? What’s going to happen to it now that is has fallen down? This is a great hand’s on activity for adventurous kids.

BUILDING DREAMCATCHERS

Our lives are routed in routine. Our minds are occupied with the next step to make in our day: the dinner to prepare for family, the housework, the kids, our jobs, etc. Come join Helia proprietor Bridghe McCracken in practicing mindfulness -- to quiet the mind and body through meditation and art. Escape into the woods for an hour. Build a natural dream catcher out of found objects. Please bring your own clippers to collect material for your personal custom project.

SPIRALS IN NATURE // FOR CHILDREN

Nature is a composition of patterns, shapes and swirls. Your child can experience swirls in nature through sight, touch and movement. Hannah Goodnow will read Swirl by Swirl by Joyce Sidman followed by a quest to find swirls on our farm. Explore, walk or run in a swirl, touch a swirl, smell a swirl, hold a swirl.

GONE BIRDING

Join us for an excursion through the beautiful and diverse woodlands and habitats of Sky Meadow Farm. Local birding expert, Greg Ward, will lead a guided and informative bird walk. Please bring your own binoculars to get the most out of all that can be seen and heard during the calm morning hours.

EDIBLE NATIVE + INVASIVE PLANTS

The Berkshires are home to over 100 species of edible wild plants. Many of these species are more nutritious and flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. Join wild edibles enthusiast and author Russ Cohen, for a three-hour ramble around Sky Meadow Farm to learn about edible wild plants. Keys to the identification of reach species will be provided, along with info on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods, as well as guidelines for safe and responsible foraging.

LIFE IN A MEADOW // FOR CHILDREN

Explore the meadows at Sky Meadow Farm and search for butterflies, bugs, or beautiful flowers. After our adventure with Hannah Goodnow, we will guide a picture and write a short story about what we saw, touched or smelled while exploring. Practice observation nature while using all of your senses.

FLOWER MANDALA CREATION // PRACTICING MINDFULNESS

Come practice mindfulness to quiet the mind and body, through meditation, art and nature, with Bridghe McCracken. Retreat into nature for an hour to build a flower mandala letting your mind become calm and quiet through your interactions with nature.
